Foundation Repair Methods: Slabjacking Versus Piering

Your home’s foundation is the most important element, so if something goes awry, you must consult a professional foundation contractor as soon as possible. A compromised foundation can result in a large number of problems throughout your home, from pest infestation to landscaping damage. Keep reading to learn more about foundation repair methods and when to know when to call in the pros!

Repair Methods

The two most common methods used for repair are slabjacking and piering. Each is used under specific circumstances and is designed to achieve the desired results. Below, you can find some information on each method.

Slabjacking

This is a common repair method for homes that are built on a concrete slab as opposed to a below-grade basement. The basics of slabjacking include the following:

  • A pattern of holes drilled into the area needs repair.
  • A synthetic lifting solution, similar in texture to grout, is poured into the holes and beneath the slab using specialized equipment.
  • The synthetic material will fill in the void under the concrete, which, in turn, raises the slab to a level that is even with the surrounding concrete.
  • The contractor will patch the holes using a concrete mix.

Piering

This repair method involves using metal or concrete posts that will help to bolster a failing foundation. Push piers are built using galvanized or epoxy-coated steel pipe; they are then drilled into the foundation using a hydraulic ram. Helical piers are steel screws that will be driven deep into the ground using a hydraulic torque motor. At this point, the hydraulic jacks will raise the sinking foundation to the proper level, and the foundation will be locked into place using either bolted or welded wall brackets.
