No More Wet Areas
A waterproof foundation is especially designed to be used on dry land. It is not water-resistant. Some products claim to be both. That would be an oxymoron. Dry land is what a waterproof foundation is made to withstand. It’s there to keep the building dry in the event of rain or flooding. Waterproofs are made with materials that are designed to not let water pass through.
What Are the Different Types of Waterproofing
There are several types of waterproofing, each having its own pros and cons. Some are more expensive than others, as well as more difficult to apply, so use them wisely.
Dry Waterproofing
This is applied by spraying the outside of a wall with a special water-resistant surface sealant. It is done in the same way a paint is applied. The sealant will dry in about an hour and once dry, any water that comes in contact with the coating will bead up and roll off.
Underlayment Waterproofing
In dry climates, this is a must. Not only does it keep the structure dry in case of rain, but leaks under a floor can result in water damage to the foundation. It’s done by applying two layers of exceptionally strong and water-tight material to the subfloor.
Waterproofing Under the Slab
Waterproofing under the slab keeps the foundation, or the bottom of the wall, dry in case of flooding. This is done using the same method as underlayment waterproofing, however, with the addition of a water-resistant material, such as tar, concrete, or cement.
Waterproofing the Interior of Walls
walls can get wet in the event of a heavy rain. Waterproofing the interior of walls does not keep water out but does keep moisture from causing the walls to rot and fall out.
